The Palm House, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, 1999

The installation took its impetus from notions of propagation and exponential exotic growth in response to characteristics of a late 19th century palm house. This glass structure is located within botanic gardens that are themselves the product of an ambition for an imagined landscape, a place where other orders are grafted onto present circumstances. With these associations of place and purpose a field of telecommunications antennas were fixed to the interior superstructure of the building whilst a recorded soundscape played repeatedly. Echoing to a dense digital mix of recordings made from Japanese video game parlours that featured simulated gunfire and combat martial arts, the palm house windows were kept open to create the sense of a permeable space reinforced by an uninterrupted, open expanse at ground level.
